virtual storport update for 2003

Does anyone know if http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943295 (virtual storport support for 2003) is installed as part of Windows Update and would be expected to be installed on an up-to-date system?

I would like to be able to do one of the following:

  1. detect the presence of 943295 and refuse to install if not present, instructing the user to manually install it
  2. automatically download and install it if required
  3. bundle it with my driver package (I assume MS says no here - I can’t see anything about redistributing it)

I’m making some changes to my drivers that may mean that I can’t support scsiport properly anymore (virtual scsiport was always a bit of a hack) but still want to be able to support 2003 as best as I can…

Thanks

James

In 2009 it had to be downloaded, I haven’t looked since then but I would
assume it probably still is that way.

It can be slipstreamed to 2003 install CD, that about most that can be done.

Win 2003 is pretty much dead for new deployment, anyway.

Why not just bundle that package with your driver? That’s what Hyper-V does. (James, I’m assuming you’re still working on paravirtualized drivers for Xen here.)

We just put all of it on a virtual CD ROM ISO file and present it to the guest VM if the user chooses “install integration components.”

I guess I didn’t read your message carefully enough before responding.

Microsoft doesn’t limit redistribution of QFE packages (things from Windows Update.) In fact, we expect that most organizations are going to manage distribution of them.

The WDF coinstaller, for instance, is a QFE package that you distribute with you drivers.

After sleeping on this, I realize that I have no idea what the distribution rights are for a QFE package. Please don’t take my advice as the final word.
